US Army Veteran Announces Candidacy for Salt Lake County Council District 5

WEST JORDANDavid Pyne, a forty year old former United States Army officer, veterans’ advocate, local attorney and resident of West Jordan announced today that he has decided to run to fill the vacancy created by Salt Lake County Councilman Jeff Allen’s recent announcement that he will resign at the end of the month.

Pyne praised Allen saying, “I would like to personally commend Jeff Allen for his excellent and distinguished record of service to the people of the 5th County Council District during the past three years. I wish him all the best as he moves on to pursue his endeavors in the private sector.”

The 5th District includes most of West Jordan and incorporates parts of the cities of Taylorsville, West Valley City, Murray, Midvale, South Jordan, Draper, Sandy, Riverton and Bluffdale. The Salt Lake County Republican Party will be holding a Special Caucus Election on December 19th in Sandy to decide on three nominees which will be sent to the County Council to decide which one will be seated. “If I am fortunate enough to be elected to the County Council, I promise to work hard and fight for the interests of all of the citizens of the district in Salt Lake City.” He added that if elected he would strive to work in a bi-partisan fashion with the Democrat-led County Council to get things done while at the same time staying true to his political principles.

David currently works as a government contracts specialist and has spent the past decade working in a number of capacities in the defense and space industry. In addition, he has served as a Senate District Chairman and Salt Lake County Republican Party Executive Committee member and as Salt Lake County Chairman for the Huntsman-Herbert re-election effort. He currently serves as a Vice President of the Association of the United States Army’s Utah Chapter and as Vice Chairman of the Utah State Legislative Compensation Commission.

He received a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from Brigham Young University with minors in international relations and history in 1992 and is a 1995 graduate of Southwestern University School of Law. In 2000, he graduated from Georgetown University’s prestigious School of Foreign Service and received a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies. Previously, he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 1988-1990.

David has been married to his wife, Donelle, for the past fourteen years and they are the proud parents of four beautiful daughters—Christina age 13, Kathryn, 9, Caitlin, 8, and Ashley, 6.

He concluded by saying, “I believe I am the strongest candidate in the race to replace Councilman Jeff Allen. Once elected to the County Council, I will fight to improve education quality, promote job-growth, stop tax increases on working families and improve transit corridors in the county.
